White Papers
These white papers are based on some of the articles that I originally wrote for this blog. The content isn’t new, but the grammar and spelling has surely been improved! They’re also useful if you want to print them out and pass it around. These articles have recently been updated with prettier layout and graphics but with the same content. I’ve made both available.
- An Enterprise Strategy for Agile Transition. Once introduced into an organization Agile software development practices can spread quicker than can be controlled. Without a strategy Agile projects can emerge with different or even conflicting approaches. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but a traditionally top-down management structure can be uncomfortable adjusting to the more egalitarian Agile approach. There will be concerns over introducing Agile practices in a consistent manner without causing undue risk. (link to new pdf, link to original pdf)
- Impediments to Enterprise Agile. In the paper Enterprise Strategy for Introducing Agile, I discussed an overall road-map for introducing Agile methodologies into an enterprise followed by a plan. That paper only considered an idealized scenario, one in which there was a logical progression and there was little (if any) objection. This article discusses some of the impediments that may be faced by a transition to Agile methods. (link to new pdf, link to original pdf)
- Technical Debt and Design Death. This first part of ths paper is an introduction and discussion of the concepts of technical debt, design death, and their tell-tale characteristics. The second part of the article discusses the impact of technical debt on legacy systems and introduces some coping strategies. (link to new pdf, link to original pdf)
Presentations
I do a lot of 1-off presentations which are typically tailored for a particular client. I can redistribute these 1-off presentations but occasionally I’ll do a presentation that others might find useful. I’ll add to this list over time.
- Writing User Stories. Here’s one of my early presentations on Writing Users Stories. It was for a 1 hour workshop at the ScrumExchange in 2006
- Introduction to Agile Engineering. A presentation that I did for the Seattle Scrum Users group on May 29th, 2008. It’s a gentle introduction to the big four engineering practices: Continuous Integration, Test Driven Development, Refactoring and Pair programming.
- Technical debt. A short but entertaining presentation that I did for the Brisbane Scrum Users group on 25th February, 2009. It’s an overview of technical debt, what causes it, and how to deal with technical debt.
- What is Scrum? This was a short webinar (1 hour) that I did to start the conversation about what is Scrum, and where does it come from.
